Create a filling comfort meal without any extra prep work with this crock pot smothered chicken recipe made with tender, pull-apart chicken and a thick, creamy gravy.
Place the chicken in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker.
Add the chicken broth, gravy mix, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, paprika, Italian seasoning, chicken soup, Worcestershire sauce, bell pepper, and onion on top of the chicken.
Cover and cook on high for 3-4 hours or low for 5-6 hours.
Shred the chicken with two forks and mix until the chicken is coated.
Serve over mashed potatoes or rice and enjoy!
Notes
Avoid overcooking the chicken and use a meat thermometer to monitor the meat towards the end of cooking. The safe internal temperature of cooked chicken is 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
Thicken your gravy with a cornstarch slurry. Combine a tablespoon of cornstarch and a tablespoon of cold water, then stir it into the gravy until you reach your desired consistency.
Shred your cooked chicken in your stand mixer instead of using forks. Use the paddle attachment and mix at a low speed until it’s perfectly shredded.
