In a 6-quart slow cooker add root beer, barbecue sauce, onion powder, mustard powder, garlic, and black pepper. Mix until well combined.
Place chicken in sauce and completely coat.
Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 2½-3½ hours.
Shred chicken with two forks in the slow cookers and mix into the sauce.
