Why You’ll Love This Crock Pot Steak Bites Recipe
- A Hit With the Whole Family: Kids and adults alike go crazy for this recipe! It’s especially great for young kids who may be picky eaters or who are learning to cut up their steak properly. Since it’s already in bite-sized pieces, it’s an easy meal for them to enjoy!
- Fall-Apart Tender: Making these garlic butter steak bites and potatoes in the slow cooker gives them the best melt-in-your-mouth texture.
- Hands-Off Cooking: These garlic steak bites are so easy to make. Fifteen minutes of preparation and then just let the slow cooker do the work!
Ingredients
- Sirloin Steak: A top sirloin steak is tender enough to grill or pan sear, but when you cook it in the Crock Pot, it's even more tender! For this recipe, we're going to cut the steak into bite-sized pieces. You can also use round steak or stew meat.
- Yellow Onion: I like the mild flavor of yellow onion for these steak bites in the crockpot. White onion or shallots work too!
- Petite Yukon Gold Potatoes: Yukon Golds are buttery and go well with steak. You could also use baby red potatoes. Just be sure to cut them down to bite-sized pieces that are around the same size as the steak, so everything cooks evenly.
- Asparagus: You’re going to want to cut the asparagus into 2-inch pieces. If you’re not a fan of asparagus, you could also use green beans, broccoli, or zucchini.
- Butter: I like to use salted butter for this recipe and will sometimes splurge on high-quality butter.
- Garlic: Minced garlic in the sauce is so good! It really brings together all the flavors. Be sure to mince it finely so it blends in with everything.
- Worcestershire Sauce: To give some depth, tanginess and umami flavor.
- Seasonings: I used black pepper, paprika, mustard powder, dried rosemary, and dried thyme for these steak bites.
See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.
Variations
- Gluten-Free: To make this recipe gluten-free, just look for a Worcestershire sauce without gluten. Sometimes they contain malt vinegar or soy sauce that does contain gluten. You could also leave the Worcestershire out or replace it with a little balsamic vinegar or gluten-free soy sauce like tamari or liquid aminos.
- Sweeter BBQ Version: Not a garlic fan or want a different flavor? Use barbecue sauce, a little brown sugar, and paprika to season the meat.
- Au Jus Gravy: Adding an aus jus gravy packet is another way you can add a lot of flavor to this dish.
- Creamy Soup Addition: Adding a can of cream of mushroom soup is another way to make this dish with a creamy and delicious sauce.
How to Make Garlic Butter Steak Bites in the Crock Pot
Before assembling, be sure to get everything chopped into bite-sized pieces including the steak, asparagus, and potatoes. I usually just cut the potatoes in half if they are pretty small.
- Step 1: Fill Up the Crock Pot. Add your potatoes and asparagus to opposite ends of the slow cooker. Then mix the steak and onions together and put them in the center.
- Step 2: Make the Sauce. Whisk together the melted butter, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, black pepper, paprika, mustard powder, rosemary, and thyme. Pour it over everything.
- Step 3: Cover and Cook. Cook on low for 4-5 hours.
- Step 4: Dig In. Serve hot over rice or with your other favorite sides. Enjoy!
Hint: Make Ahead
If you want, you can get everything chopped the night before you’re making this recipe. Then just keep the steak and veggies in the fridge in an airtight container or bag and it’s ready to go the next day when you prep the Crock Pot.
Expert Tips
- Storing and Reheating: Leftovers keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or you can freeze these for up to 3 months. Reheat the dish in the microwave on medium heat for 30-60 second intervals until it is heated through.
- Cuts of Beef: I like to use sirloin in this recipe and think it’s the best steak for steak bites because it ends up being so tender. You could also use round steak, chuck roast, stew meat, or flat iron steak.
- Even-Sized Pieces: Be sure to cut the steak evenly so you don’t have any overcooked or undercooked parts of the steak.
- Cooking Time: Every slow cooker is a little different. Keep an eye on the meat when it’s at 4.5-5 hours to make sure that it doesn’t overcook or dry out.

- Serve crockpot steak bites and potatoes with my crockpot steamed rice or brown rice, slow cooker mashed potatoes, or egg noodles. A side of steamed broccoli goes well with them too!
- These steak bites are so good with crockpot crack potatoes or crockpot collard greens. Have some crusty bread, too.

Recipe FAQs
I think it's best cooked in the slow cooker, like in this recipe. If you overcook steak, it can become tough and chewy, but not with this recipe! Cooking it low and slow helps it maintain the perfect juicy and tender texture that practically melts in your mouth.
No, you can put the raw steak meat directly in the slow cooker. Letting it cook low and slow is what results in tender, juicy steak bites.
