- Sirloin Steak: This cut of beef is versatile for cooking in different ways. It’s relatively lean but still has enough fat to keep it tender. Cut the steak into large chunks so it cooks evenly in the slow cooker.
- Yellow Onion and Garlic: Cooking onions and garlic with the steak helps keep the meat juicy and enhances the flavor.
- Beef Broth: Cooking the meat in broth helps it stay juicy and intensifies the flavor.
- Au Jus Gravy Mix: This flavorful seasoning blend turns the broth into a thin gravy, helping enhance the beefy taste of these easy crock pot steak bites. I love to keep a few packs of these in the pantry to make easy dinners like an easy pot roast or for a quick gravy for my family's best meatloaf recipe.

How to Make Steak Bites in the Crock Pot
This steak bites crockpot recipe is the perfect way to enjoy steak on a busy weeknight. It takes all the guesswork and effort out of cooking steak, but still results in a succulent steak dinner.
- Step 1: Cut the Steak. Chop the steak into bite-size pieces and add them to the crock pot with butter and onions.
- Step 2: Make the Gravy. In a separate bowl, combine the beef broth, garlic, and au jus gravy mix and whisk. Then pour the sauce over the steak bites in the crock pot.
- Step 3: Cover and Cook. Secure the lid on the crock pot and cook the steak for 7-8 hours on low. You can also cook them on high for 3-4 hours, but the steak may not turn out as tender.
These juicy steak bites are delicious served over a scoop of crockpot white rice, mashed potatoes with garlic, or egg noodles.
Expert Tips
- Cut the Steak into Larger Pieces: The chunks of steak will shrink as they cook, so cut the raw beef into pieces that are a little larger than bite-sized. This helps you have good chunks of beef instead of tiny pieces of steak.
- Low and Slow is Best: Cooking the steak bites in the crock pot on low for a longer amount of time gives the muscle fibers more time to break down and the fat more time to melt, which is how you get tender beef tips. This is especially important for cheaper, tougher cuts of beef.
- Sear for Extra Flavor: Give the steak bites more color and flavor by searing them in a hot skillet for a few minutes before adding them to the slow cooker. This helps seal the flavor and creates a brown crust on the outside of the meat.

- Pair steak bites with potato dishes like slow cooker scalloped potatoes and crock pot baked potatoes.
- This is also the perfect meal for making one of your favorite casserole side dishes like green bean casserole in the slow cooker and this easy mac and cheese.
Storage Directions
- Storing: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can also freeze the steak bites for up to 3 months.
- Reheating: Reheat the steak bites in a skillet with a bit of butter over medium heat until they are warmed through. Be sure to thaw frozen steak bites for 24 hours in the refrigerator before reheating them.
Recipe FAQs
Use a meat thermometer to ensure the steak bites are fully cooked. Medium-well steak will register at 140° F, and well done is about 145°.
Cuts of beef with a lot of marbling that have a lot of connective tissue and fat are best for slow cooking because the fat and tissue breakdown as it cooks to make the meat tender.
It’s not recommended to cook frozen steak in the crock pot because it sits at an unsafe temperature for too long, which encourages bacterial growth. You should thaw frozen steak before adding it to the crock pot.

Mine is in the crockpot now. I used stew meat that I seared first and I added more broth. I left out the onions because my son doesn’t like them. Crockpot pot in low for 8 hours. I will serve with rice. I can’t wait to try it.

I used Better then Bullion for the stock. Because that is salty I omitted the salt. I also omitted the au jus gravy mix because I do not care for those prepacked packets. It smelled stongly of onion and garlic at one point, but it mellowed down into a wonderful and flavorful dish. The tips were tender and a big hit. I served it with rice. It reheats easily. I will be making it again.
Deb says
