There's something nostalgic about a steaming hot plate of Crock Pot Swiss Steak with its fork-tender beef and flavorful tomato sauce. I recommend serving it with mashed potatoes or crusty garlic bread for a yummy, homemade meal.

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Made with Pantry Staples: The ingredient list for Swiss steak with gravy is simple and mostly filled with familiar ingredients you might already have at home. It’s definitely a beginner-friendly recipe.
    • Simple and Effortless: This easy Swiss steak recipe is a go-to in our rotation on days when we don’t have much time or energy to cook, but we want a satisfying meal with plenty of protein. It’s so easy in the slow cooker!
    • Great Flavor: This one is a crowd pleaser! Kids and adults alike love the rich flavors and it’s easy to pair this with a few veggie sides and you’ll have an amazing meal ready.

    Ingredients

    • Round Steak: This is a lean, moderately tough cut of beef that works great for slow cooking. It will tenderize and be fall-apart tender by the time it's finished cooking. You could also use bottom roast, top round roast, chuck roast, or cubed stew meat.
    • Petite Yukon Gold Potatoes: I love the creaminess of Yukon Golds. You could also use baby red potatoes. Be sure to cut them into evenly-sized pieces.
    • Carrots and Yellow Onion: Fresh veggies add a great base of flavor to this dish. Some Swiss Steak recipes also call for celery or green bell pepper, which would give some added crunch.
    • Garlic: I love the depth of flavor it adds when you use minced garlic in this recipe. I prefer using fresh but you could also use garlic from the jar.
    • Dry Onion Soup Mix: Onion soup mix brings a lot of savoriness and saltiness to this dish.
    • Diced Tomatoes: The acidity and bold red color are a classic aspect of the dish.
    • Low-Sodium Beef Broth: Low-sodium broth works best for this recipe since the onion soup mix packet has enough salt.
    • Ketchup: For more tomato flavor and sweetness.
    • Worcestershire Sauce: For a bit of umami flavor that really brings out the beef.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Add Celery: Chopped celery gives this dish a little more crunch and fits with how a classic Swiss steak recipe is made.
    • Add Mushrooms: Mushrooms would go well in this Crock Pot Swiss steak recipe. You could also throw in a can of cream of mushroom soup. Add both at the beginning of the cooking time.
    • Use Rotel Tomatoes: If you want a bit more kick, use a can of Rotel tomatoes with green chilies and include the juices.

How to Make Crock Pot Swiss Steak

Here’s exactly how to make Swiss steak. Once you have all of the veggies chopped, it’s so easy– a classic dump-and-go style recipe!

Steaks placed over the top of the vegetables in a slow cooker.
    1. Step 1: Fill Up Your Crock Pot. Place the carrots, onions, and potatoes in the bottom of your 6-quart slow cooker. Then place the round steaks on top.

    1. Step 2: Make the Sauce. Mix together the salt, garlic, onion soup, diced tomatoes, beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and cornstarch.

    1. Step 3: Add the Sauce. Pour it over the meat and vegetables.

    1. Step 4: Cook. Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours or on high for 2-3 hours.

    Expert Tips

    • Don't Use a Frozen Meat: Putting frozen meat in the Crock Pot isn't a good idea because it will take too long to warm up before it starts to cook. Let the beef thaw overnight, then follow the recipe as directed the next day.
    • Add More Garlic: If you’re a garlic fan, you can double the minced garlic to boost up the flavor of this dish.
    • For Thicker Sauce: You can add more cornstarch slurry at the end of the cooking time if you need the sauce to thicken up.
    • Storing: Allow the dish to cool to room temperature, then transfer it to an airtight container. Refrigerate for 3-4 days or freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat the dish in the microwave on medium heat for 30-60 second intervals until it is heated through.

    Serving Suggestions

Swiss steak in the Crock Pot is perfect for a comforting dinner at home on a chilly evening. You could also have it as a Sunday family meal, dinner party with friends, or winter holiday gathering when everyone is craving comfort food. Here are some ideas for how to serve slow cooker Swiss steak.

    • Serve over slow cooker mashed potatoes, garlic mashed potatoes, slow cooker rice, or egg noodles.
    • Pair Swiss steak with green beans or a fresh green salad. You could also serve it with green bean casserole.
    • Rolls, garlic bread, and focaccia go well with this so you can soak up all of the tasty sauce! You can also use the meat on a tasty sandwich with whole grain bread or a ciabatta roll.
    • If you’re really hungry, make steak and gravy and then have apple cobbler or chocolate lava cake for dessert!

    Equipment

    • My Favorite Slow-Cooker
    • Slow-Cooker Liners

    Ingredients

    • 2 pounds round steak
    • 1 pound petite Yukon gold potatoes washed and quarterd
    • 3 carrots peeled and cut into 1-inch pieces
    • 1 medium yellow onion chopped
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 3 teaspoons garlic minced
    • 1 (1 ounce) package dry onion soup mix
    • 1 (14.5 ounce) can of diced tomatoes
    • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
    • ⅓ cup ketchup
    • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
    • ⅓ cup cornstarch

    Instructions

    • Place the carrots, onions, and potatoes in the bottom of a 6-quart slow cooker. Then, place the round steaks on top.
    • Add salt, garlic, onion soup, diced tomatoes, beef broth, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, and cornstarch in a medium bowl. Mix until well combined and pour over meat and vegetables.
    • Cover and cook on low for 6-7 hours or high for 2-3 hours.
    • Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

    Notes

    • Worcestershire sauce enhances the umami flavors of the dish. You can always add an extra splash if you want!
    • After cooking, allow the Swiss steak to sit for 5-10 minutes before serving. This helps the juices redistribute throughout the meat.
    • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days or freeze for a future easy dinner. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave.
