    Ham and potato soup is a rustic classic that we all know and love. It's the perfect dish for cold days, and with its easy ingredients, it's always a great choice.

    This soup was inspired by my other creamy potato soup recipe on the site, and it pairs well with this delicious bread for a full meal.     Ingredients

    • Yukon gold potatoes
    • Ham - cubed
    • Yellow onion - diced
    • Carrots - peeled and chopped
    • Celery - chopped
    • Chicken broth
    • Garlic - minced
    • Paprika

    • Sour cream
    • Heavy cream
    • All-purpose flour
    • Cheddar cheese - shredded

    Flavor Variations and Substitutions

    • Add red pepper flakes for a kick of heat.
    • Russet or red potatoes can also be used, depending on your preference.
    • Canned or leftover ham both work well in this recipe.
    • If you don't have sour cream, use full-fat Greek yogurt. They taste almost the same.

    How To Make Slow Cooker Ham and Potato Soup

    1: Add all the ingredients except the heavy cream, flour, sour cream, and cheddar cheese to the slow cooker.

    2: Cook until the vegetables are tender.

    3: Whisk heavy cream and flour to make a slurry.

    4: Add the slurry, sour cream, and cheddar cheese and cook until the soup thickens.

    Hint

    Add the slurry, sour cream, and cheese to the soup just a few minutes before it's ready to prevent curdling.

    Storage

    Refrigerate your soup for up to 4 days in an air-tight, freezer-safe container. For longer storage, freeze the soup for up to 3 months in an air-tight, freezer-safe container.

    To reheat the soup, place it in a saucepan over medium-low and cook until heated through.

    Ingredients
      

    • 2½ pounds Yukon gold potatoes cleaned, rinsed and cut into ¾" pieces
    • 1 pound ham Cubed
    • 1 medium yellow onion Diced
    • 2 large carrots Peeled and chopped
    • 3 ribs celery Chopped
    • 4 cups chicken broth
    • 3 teaspoons garlic Minced
    • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
    • 1 teaspoon paprika
    • 1½ teaspoons black pepper
    • ½ cup sour cream
    • 2 cups heavy cream
    • ¼ cup all-purpose flour
    • 1 cup cheddar cheese Shredded

    Instructions
     

    • Add the potatoes, ham, onion, carrots, celery, chicken broth, garlic, thyme, paprika, and black pepper to a 6-quart slow cooker.
    • Cover and cook on low for 7-8 hours or high for 4-5 hours.
    • In a medium bowl, add heavy cream and flour. Whisk until well combined. Add flour slurry, sour cream, and cheddar cheese to the slow cooker. Stir and continue to cook for 15 minutes.
    • Serve while hot and enjoy!
