This rich and flavorful chicken recipe is the perfect weeknight meal for your family or entertaining guests because it requires minimal prep work. Everyone will love the succulent chicken and the creamy, indulgent gravy with veggies. It is the perfect cozy meal after a long day!

If you like this smothered chicken in the crock pot, you will love my Smothered Pork Chops, Crock Pot Chicken and Gravy, and these juicy Meatballs with Gravy!

    Why You’ll Love This Recipe

    • Easy Comfort Meal: This delicious smothered chicken with cream of chicken soup recipe is the perfect cozy meal after a long day. However, unlike many comfort meals, you don’t have to spend all day making it. After a few minutes of prep, you let it cook and come home to a wonderful meal.
    • Budget-Friendly: The chicken and easy-to-find ingredients are perfect for a household on a budget. Everything is fairly inexpensive but still creates a hearty and satisfying meal.
    • Easily Customized: Switch up the cut of chicken, spices, and other ingredients to make this recipe ideal for you. Whether you want to use ingredients you have on hand, add more vegetables, or use a different cut of chicken, this smothered chicken recipe is incredibly versatile.

    Ingredients

    • Chicken Breasts: The easiest cut of chicken to use for this recipe is boneless, skinless chicken breasts. There are no bones to deal with and they shred easily after cooking.
    • Low-Sodium Chicken Broth: Chicken broth adds a lot of flavor and moisture to this smothered crock pot chicken. A low-sodium broth is best because the other ingredients add a lot of salt.
    • Chicken Gravy Packet: This will give the chicken a lovely, rich gravy full of flavor to cook in. You can use brown gravy, but chicken tastes the best.
    • Cream of Chicken Soup: A can of creamy soup gives this smothered chicken a thick, creamy texture and adds a lot of flavor.
    • Worcestershire Sauce: Deepen the umami flavors of the dish with a bit of flavorful Worcestershire sauce.
    • Vegetables: Red bell pepper adds a little sweetness and breaks up all of the beige in the dish. You can also use yellow or orange bell peppers for a similar flavor or green peppers for an added kick and more bitter flavor. Yellow onions develop a rich, buttery sweetness, and add a more aromatic flavor.
    • Italian Seasoning: This blend of dried herbs includes basil, oregano, thyme, and parsley. Use a premade Italian seasoning or create your own.
    • Additional Seasonings: Amplify the flavors of this creamy chicken dinner and add more seasonings like garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and pepper.

See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.

    Variations

    • Different Cuts of Chicken: This slow cooker smothered chicken recipe works well with any cut of chicken. Boneless, skinless chicken thighs are richer in flavor and taste amazing in the gravy. You could also use bone-in chicken legs, wings, or thighs, just skip shredding and serve them whole so bones don’t get lost.
    • Add More Veggies: This versatile dish pairs well with many different vegetables. Try adding mushrooms, green beans, carrots, peas, or corn to the crock pot for a veggie-packed meal.
    • Add a Bigger Punch of Flavor: Add a different punch of flavor by adding some Creole seasoning or blackening seasoning in place of the herbs and spices in the recipe for a savory, yet spicy flavor.
    • Try a Different Soup: Instead of cream of chicken soup, try cream of mushroom, cream of celery, or cream of onion soup. It will slightly alter the flavor of the dish but still add the same creamy consistency.

How to Make Smothered Chicken in the Crock Pot

This easy slow cooker smothered chicken is the perfect low-maintenance comfort meal for a weeknight dinner or rainy afternoon. It’s packed full of flavor and can be customized to match the needs of your family.

Gravy ingredients mixed together in a clear measuring cup.
    1. Step 1: Mix the Ingredients. Stir together the chicken broth, gravy mix, seasonings, cream of chicken soup, and Worcestershire sauce in a medium bowl.
Chicken, gravy, onions and green bell peppers added to the crock pot.
    1. Step 2: Add Everything to the Crock Pot. Place the chicken breasts in the bottom of a 6-quart crock pot, add the diced onions and bell pepper, and pour the gravy and soup mixture over everything.
Chicken cooked in a gravy sauce.
    1. Step 3: Let It Cook. Secure the lid on the top of the slow cooker and cook the smothered chicken for 3-4 hours on high or on low for 5-6 hours.
chicken shredded and mix in a gravy sauce in the crock pot.
    1. Step 4: Shred and Serve. Shred the cooked chicken with two forks, then mix the shredded chicken into the gravy. Be sure to coat every piece of chicken! Serve it over mashed potatoes, pasta, or rice.

    Expert Tips

    • Don’t Overcook the Chicken: Avoid tough, chewy chicken by not overcooking it. The safe internal temperature of cooked chicken is 165° Fahrenheit. If you’re unable to monitor the temperature of your chicken, I recommend making this recipe with chicken thighs. They are more fatty and can cook beyond 165° F and still taste delicious!
    • Thicken the Gravy: If your gravy is a little too thin, then make a cornstarch slurry to thicken it up. Combine a tablespoon of cornstarch and a tablespoon of cold water, then stir it into the gravy. Remove the chicken before adding the slurry to make stirring easier.
    • Make Shredding a Breeze: Skip the forks and add your cooked chicken to your stand mixer! Use the paddle attachment and mix at a low speed for perfectly shredded chicken every time.
    • Make It in the Instant Pot: In a hurry for dinner, but don’t have time to prepare the slow cooker ahead of time? You can make this smothered chicken in the Instant Pot! Add the ingredients to the Instant Pot and cook on high pressure for 15-20 minutes (15 for white meat, 20 for dark meat). Then allow for a 5-minute natural release before using quick release to dispel any remaining pressure and serve.

    Storage Directions

    • Storing: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.
    • Reheating: Reheat this smothered chicken in the microwave for 60-second intervals, stirring between intervals, until it is heated through. You can also heat it over medium heat on the stovetop until it’s warmed through. Be sure to thaw frozen leftovers for 24 hours in the refrigerator before reheating them.
