- Yellow Cake Mix: The cake mix makes this recipe so easy to bring together. You won’t need to measure out every single ingredient.
- Cinnamon and Nutmeg: I like the bit of warmth that these spices add. You could also use pumpkin pie spice.
- Butter: Butter makes this dessert so rich and delicious. I usually use a high-quality salted butter but you could also use unsalted if you want.
- Brown Sugar: Sweet, molasses-flavored brown sugar makes the crumble on top so tasty and crumbly.
- Rolled Oats: Rolled oats are used to make the topping. I use the quick oats for the best results..
See the recipe card below for exact ingredient amounts, nutritional information, and detailed instructions.
Variations
- Vary the Cake Mix: You could use white cake mix, chocolate cake mix, or spiced cake mix instead of yellow for a slightly different flavor.
- Gluten-Free Cobbler: It’s easy to make this recipe gluten-free. Just use gluten-free cake mix and gluten-free flour in the topping.
- Use Fresh Fruit: It’s a little more work to make the pie filling from scratch, but it is fun to get fresh fruit that’s in season at the farmers' market and use it for this cake mix cherry cobbler.
How to Make Cherry Cobbler in the Crock Pot
Here’s how to make cherry cobbler in a Crock Pot. It’s so easy!
- Step 1: Pour in the Pie Filling. Place all that gooey pie filling at the bottom of the Crock Pot.
- Step 2: Mix the Cake Mix and Spices. Whisk the cake mix, cinnamon, and nutmeg together in a bowl, then spread it evenly over the pie filling. Do not mix them.
- Step 3: Add Butter. Pour 8 tablespoons of melted butter over the dry cake mix, being careful to spread it evenly. This is going to help keep the cake moist as it cooks.
- Step 4: Add Brown Sugar Topping and Cook. Mix brown sugar topping ingredients and pour over the cobbler. Cover and cook on high for 3-4 hours. Serve with your favorite ice cream.
Hint: Every Crock Pot is A Little Different
Keep in mind that some Crock Pots run hotter than others. Keep an eye on how quickly it’s cooking when you hit the 2.5-hour mark.
Expert Tips
- Paper Towel Trick: To keep any moisture or condensation from getting into the dessert, put a few paper towels over the top of the crock pot, then place the lid on top. This will help ensure that the topping stays crispy!
- Place the Butter Evenly: Drizzling the melted butter over the cake mix helps the dry ingredients combine and develop a moist, tender texture while the cobbler cooks. Try to cover as much of the surface as possible.
- Cook Fully Covered: Keep the lid on tight while it’s cooking and resist the urge to take the lid off because that will let all the heat out and require a longer cooking time.
- Use the Toothpick Test: The cake parts should be golden brown when the cobbler is done cooking. You can double check by inserting a toothpick and making sure it comes out clean.
- When Doubling the Recipe: You won't have to double the cooking time, but it will need a little longer. Check at three hours and then keep an eye on it to see how long it needs.
Storage Directions
- Storing: Leftovers keep in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
- Reheating: Reheat the dish in the microwave on medium heat for 30-second intervals until it is heated through or in an oven preheated to 350°F for 15-20 minutes.
- Freezing: You can freeze the cobbler in individual portions or as a whole piece. Be sure to use a freezer-safe container. When you're ready to reheat it, let it thaw in the fridge overnight the day before serving.

I haven't tried it that way, but I don't see why you couldn't. Check it after 3 hours and see how much more time you need.
A 6-quart slow cooker works best for this crockpot cobbler with cake mix.
Yes. Use a greased 8x8 inch or 9x9 inch pan. Similar to how you'd assemble everything in the Crock Pot, add the cherry pie filling to the bottom of the pan, then spread the cake mix over the top and place the slices of butter on. Bake at 350 for 30-45 minutes or until it's golden brown.
